Artist's Statement for -touched- by Mitsuko Hoshino

We are pleased to announce that we will hold Mitsuko Hoshino Solo Show -touched- with the following duration, the show had initially been scheduled in April but postponed under the emergency declaration due to the thread of COVID-19.

In this unexpected situation, Hoshino reconsidered the meaning of ‘touched’, which is the title of the exhibition, and wrote “Additional note in November 2020”. Here we introduce it with the original statement written in February 2020.

Artist’s Statement in February 2020

If an artwork is a phenomenon that emerges through the filter of I, the artist, then what is “I”? A water-rich organism bounded by a warm, soft membrane which protects it from the outside world. Yet, there are many borders in this world that divide and separate people even more strongly than our own skin.

When you feel drawn into the blue of the vast sky that gently shimmers on the water surface, the concept of boundaries is unreliable like the barely discernible water surface, and my heart sways freely. The boundary itself, I think, may be mostly an illusion created from ambiguous definitions, subjective interpretations or prejudices ….

The title of this exhibition, touched, is not only the past participle form of the verb to touch – where ‘touch’ can mean not only the movement of one’s hand, but also ’touch of a brush stroke’ on a painting, or a hint of ’touching up’ makes something a little more special – but ’touched’ can also mean ‘blessed’ or ‘moved.’

In my artworks, I aim to touch on barely perceptible boundary surfaces, searching for what is beyond. I hope that these lines, colours and shapes created from what touched my heart in the flow of my live, will gently touch someone else’s heart.

Additional Note in November 2020

As is undoubtedly the case for most of us, the Covid-19 crisis has led me to re-evaluate what it means to “touch” and “be touched”. For example, in Europe, where I live currently, some daily customs such as hugging and kissing friends or stroking the arm of an anxious elderly has been prohibited since March, and that has caused a great deal of confusion and stress for the local people not only physically, but also psychologically.

Touching is a very immediate way of communication, and so is Art.

We are aware of the skin as a boundary between us and the those around us, and at the same time we feel the energy exchange, the sympathy and warmth that passes through this skin, taking place so effortlessly. As a crying baby calms down in the mother’s arms, the mother also feels the soft warmth of the baby’s body as it comforts her weary heart. I have a feeling that this ‘boundary’ is much more ambiguous than we think.

The exhibition was originally scheduled to be held in April but has been postponed due to the spread of Covid-19. This turn of events was totally unexpected when I started planning this exhibition. During these past six months, for a different reason altogether such as the fear of contracting this virus in our daily lives, we have been restlessly thinking about the meaning of ‘touch – touched’ – the physical contact between people. Naturally, the content of the work in the exhibition has also changed significantly in response to these reflections.

At this particular time when people all over the world are experiencing the same kind of anxiety and desire to move past the pandemic, I wonder how my expression as one these people will touch the hearts of others who view my work. I am looking very much forward to communicating with you.
